8 Acrylic Painting Tips for Beginners

Acrylics are very easy to use, fast-drying and can be used straight from the tube.  Here are a few tips to help you get started painting with acrylics.

Tip 1: Do not use oil based primers, if you are painting with acrylic you should use a gesso primer for acrylic.
Tip 2: Always keep a glass or container of water next to your painting  where you can place your brushes. This will prevent acrylic paint from hardening in the bristles and ruining your brushes. When using the brushes you could wipe them down with a paper towel or cloth after you have rinsed them.
Tip 3: You can use a spry bottle to keep your paint wet for longer. Also if you mist the painting it will not dry up in solid lumps. Remember acrylics dries rapidly.
Tip 4: Acrylic paint dries very quickly so you have to work fast. If the paint dries too quickly for your liking you can use some acrylic retarder.
Tip 5: If you mix your colours don't use too much water, you will see that the paint loses colour and quality.
Tip 6: When finished rinse out your brushes with water, you can also use a mild soap for cleaning. Just make sure no paint is left behind in your brushes. Don't use turpentine or white spirits, acrylics can be washed of with water.
Tip 7:Do not paint with your hands, although acrylics are water-based avoid too much contact with your skin. (90% of what you put on your skin will be absorbed by your body)
Tip 8: The most important tip: Have fun while painting !
